Johnson began at Vanderbilt Owen in 1991 as an instructor, earning tenure quickly and two Dean’s Teaching Excellence Awards before joining Dartmouth’s Tuck School as Associate Dean for 14 years. Returning as dean, he launched research centers like the Turner Family Center for Social Ventures and the Center for Health Care Market Innovation, grew the endowment over 60% to $450 million, and expanded programs including the Master of Marketing. He stepped down in 2023 to focus on teaching and research.
Johnson holds patents in interface design, testified before Congress on information security, and authors on business leadership. Now a visiting scholar at UVA Darden, he emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and student-focused innovation in management education.
